In place of a formal design education, Bendtsen trained as an apprentice for his father, who designed and built Scandinavian furniture. Through working with his father, Bendtsen gained valuable skills and a respect for non - industrial, hand - built traditions, but he was also intrigued by new technologies and ways to satisfy increasing demand. Between 1963 and 1972, Bendtsen had his own retail store where he sold his father's furniture, as well as imported Scandinavian designs. An early Bendtsen design, the Ribbon Chair, is included in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and his work was featured on a Canadian stamp celebrating industrial design. In 2006, Bendtsen was honored with the 2006 British Columbia Creative Achievement Award of Distinction. Named after the subtle cushion contour that follows its perimeter, Canyon utilizes innovative construction techniques to achieve a light and elegant aesthetic, combined with excellent comfort and longevity. As a departure from other modern tight-cover sofas, loose cushions have been added for greater comfort and versatility, and allow the sofa to have a narrower back reducing overall depth without compromising seat depth. The Canyon stops the cushions and bolster from sliding out, while creating an elegant sculptural detail that defines the overall form. A sophisticated suspension system adapted from the automotive industry is attached to an internal steel frame which provides superior support and comfort, and also allows for Canyon s thin elegant profile. In addition, the steel frame enables one seating section to securely hang off the other; removing the need for multiple legs found on most sectionals. Removable covers can be cleaned or replaced with ease.
